Get most out of Scorechase’s GMAT Gold Seekers Cove

As the latest 700 scorer (vs057) on Scorechase pointed out, If you mug MGs and VGs, you are going to be disappointed. Moreover, isnt mugging like beating the whole point of GMAT? B-schools look for quantitatively adept and verbally smart students who can make their MBA program successful and competitive. How can mugging qualify as ‘adeptness’. Anyways, to cut a long story short, mugging MGs and VGs is a total folly. Here is my suggestion on making the best use of GMAT Gold Seekers Cove

1. Solve all questions posted in the Gold Seekers Cove. No matter if its a huge RC or a small math question.

2. Post your solutions to each question. Now I know this may look like a hassle, but believe me you will be surprised when your confident answer to a seemingly trivial question turns out to be WRONG or ‘too long an approach’.

3. Be stupid and avoid being sorry. If you have a stupid question that you are hesitating in asking. Go ahead and ask, scorechase members and staff are great. I once asked Guardian about the formula for compound interest and he replied to me with a detailed derivation. It helped me gain confidence and clear a lot of concepts. No one is going to make fun of you. All members are serious MBA aspirants, they need help as much as all of us.

4. No solution must be more than 7 lines. If your solution to MG/VG is more than 10 lines, you have to revisit and try a new approach. If lost, ask other members to post their approach. I remember this speed time question that I did in like 10 minutes, one scorechaser did it in 3 steps.

5. Back to Basics. For subjects you feel really weak in, revisit the concept and then attempt the MG again. DO NOT look at the tutor’s solution unless you feel you have done everything under the sun to get the right answer. Also, If you see the tutor’s solution, do check if you agree. If you dont – RAISE an ALARM! Check out this question:

If x<0, what is the value of sqrt(-x|x|)?

I) x II) -x III)|x|

Tutors explained this question, but only those who challenged tutor’s reasoning actually benifitted.

6. Revise. At the end of every month, just go through and revise all the previous months’ MGs and VGs. Brush up on the concepts you had gotten wrong in the previous test.

7. Its about the concept and not the question. Never study expecting to see a question on GMAT. Study to prove that you have the right aptidude for MBA.

8. Volunteer to answer. OK this might sound like a stretch, but rather than tutors posting the solutions, volunteer to post the solutions yourself for MGs and VGs. When you write down a solution, the thought process gets a very high level of clarity. The pressure of getting it right helps in thinking straight and forming a habit of making the right choices.

9. Gold Seekers Ammo: Its a great resource which keeps building up. Make good use of the RC potions because they especially are the best for practicing RC.

10. Enjoy your prep and do not cram. Learning concepts go a long way.

Thanks for the information.Read your GMAT prep and really inspiring. I am in doubt of whether to take the paid service of the ST or the scorechase? Do you have any preference on this.
