Ok, I have been a big proponent of GMAT score being not that important for MBA admissions, but looks like I may have been miscalculating the things a bit. Well, let me take a step back, I dont mean to say that the essays and other admission procedures have lesser importance, it just means that GMAT may have more importance than what my research revealed previously.

What changed my mind? A live example – I just read willgetin’s test experience on Scorechase [its great way to get in touch with the MBA community]. I was surprised to see that his jump from 700 to 770 resulted in his selection to DARDEN and other top B-schools where he was waitlisted [congratulations man!]. You can check willgetin’s test experience here:

willgetin’s GMAT experience: 700 to 770 and admit to DARDEN

So do take your GMAT seriously and as always dont neglect your application essays. Pretty much the verdict is: Be prepared to be “prepared enough” on all fronts. Dont be laxed on any part of your applications.

GMAT Score – How much is enough

Lot of people talk about the dreaded 700 threshold on gmat. How important is it? To me, its overrated.

There is plenty of people who get 660-690 and take another try to make it to 700+. I have even come across a lot of them who got 710 and went for a retake retake (man!). Its definitely a feather in the cap, plus it does increase your chances of being considered for an admission, but to me a score of 660 or above is more than enough to put you in contention.

I think work experience and profile is the most important part of the application. Believe me GMAT is not even the sentry on the gateway, its just a bump on the road, you have 660, you will most likely be in line for the AdComs review. In other words, if you dont have work experience and a good profile, no matter what your score is, you will be kicked out by the MBA Ad coms.

I worked for 3 months to get my 760 score. Now I think I might have done without it. Not that I regret it, but I could have spent more time on my Essay research and application process (believe me, its the most important and time consuming part!)
